Robotics Hardware Engineer

About the Role :

We’re looking for a hands-on Hardware Engineer to design, build, and rapidly prototype the physical systems behind LUME. This is a highly multidisciplinary role spanning mechanical design, mechatronics, electrical systems, sensors, power, batteries, and manufacturing. You’ll take ideas from CAD to working hardware, building and debugging prototypes yourself while working closely with our robotics and research teams. LUME combines a mobile base, 6-DOF arm, sensors, onboard compute, battery system, lighting, and embedded electronics into a single consumer product.

What You'll Do :

• Design and prototype an entirely new robotic form factor (furniture that becomes a robot)
• Own mechanical subsystem development (kinematics, actuation, enclosures) for robotic manipulators
• Translate product vision into manufacturable CAD
• Integrate hardware, electronics, and motor control software
• Lead DFM and support early-stage manufacturing planning (supplier onboarding, scaling)
• Drive iteration cycles: build, test, debug, repeat
• Work flexible shifts including nights/weekends as needed

What We're Looking For :

  • Strong mechanical and mechatronics fundamentals

  • Excellent CAD skills and experience designing parts for real products

  • Strong hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills

  • Comfortable with electronics, soldering, wiring, connectors, sensors, and embedded hardware

  • Experience with motors, actuators, encoders, motor controllers, and robotic systems

  • Understanding of batteries, BMS, power electronics, and power distribution

  • Experience bringing up and debugging sensors and new hardware

  • Comfortable moving quickly from a rough idea to a working physical prototype

  • Strong design taste and attention to detail

  • Able to lead work with minimal guidance in a fast-moving environment

  • Communicates clearly and concisely

  • From a top 20 global university

Nice to Have :

  • Background in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or robotics

  • Fluent or professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese

  • Experience working directly with manufacturers and suppliers in Asia

  • Experience with DFM/DFA and taking hardware from prototype through EVT/DVT/PVT

  • PCB design and embedded firmware experience

  • Experience with CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, injection molding, and other manufacturing processes

  • Experience designing consumer electronics or robotics products

  • Strong industrial design intuition and an appreciation for materials, finishes, proportions, and physical interaction•

  • Obsessed with thoughtful design; can point to a product that “sparks joy” and say why

  • Loves good food and has a strong opinion on the best burrito within 2 miles (we do team meals)

  • Someone with a chip on their shoulder who gets a thrill from proving doubters wrong

  • Low-ego collaborator who gives and receives kind, actionable feedback

Details :

• Full time and internship (4-month minimum contract) options available
• In person, M–F, 9–6.
• Health benefits included, company holidays, team meals, sick leave, etc.
• Preference given to candidates who can start immediately

How to Apply :

Send your resume and a cover letter with bullet points explaining why you’re the perfect candidate for this role (highlighting relevant experiences, projects, publications, and skills). If someone referred you, please include their name in the application.

If there's something unique about you, please mention it. The clearer and more concise, the better. Make sure to mention your expected start date.
